A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that Spike Jonze had reteamed with the Beastie Boys for the first time in over a decade, directing the video for the Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 cut “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” featuring Santigold. Well, with previous efforts with the hip hop group resulting in the now classic videos for “Sabotage” and “Sure Shot,” Jonze has once again created an inventive, hilarious and memorable clip for the band.
Presented “Thunderbirds” style, the video features action figures playing out an epic story involving a mysterious group that wants to assassinate the band for unknown reasons. With movement given to the figures by attached them to poles or moving them by clearly visible hands, the video is lent a particularly wicked childhood charm that resonate with anyone with took their G.I. Joes (or whatever) into the backyard and staged some grand adventure. It’s completely goofy, but perhaps most interesting, unlike Jonze’s previous clips for the Beastie Boys, the song here is a complete afterthought and early on, is muted completely to put the priority on the unfolding plot. Yes, bullets fly, blood is spilled and even the supernatural comes into play and it ends on a hint of more to come. And indeed there is. This video below is the the shorter version with an extended version hitting the Beastie Boys website at 3:01 AM. Update: The full, eleven-minute version of the clip is up now: we’ve added it after the jump. Now we know what a Spike Jonze action movie would look like…
