While the movie world is filled with great raconteurs, and filmmakers with a rich knowledge of cinema history (even the unlikely John Landis, as you can find out right here), there are few who come with the breadth, depth and passion for film as Martin Scorsese. And even if you had no interest in Polish cinema, or weren’t even aware there was Polish cinema, let Scorsese change your mind.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center has dropped a pretty nice three-minute trailer for its upcoming series, “Masterpieces of Polish Cinema,” and have roped in Martin Scorsese, who is “presenting” the run of movies, to share with audiences why they should be checking out the films of Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Krzysztof Zanussi and more. “This is a cinema of personal vision, very strong social commitment, and poetic responsibility from which we’ve all learned, and which sets a very, very high standard, that as a filmmaker, I strive to achieve with every film, every time out,” Scorsese explains.
A nice overview of the series to come, even if you’re not in New York City, you should note the list of programming and track ’em down on your own. And if you are in New York City, be sure to make the most of your chance to see these on the big screen. “Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema” runs from February 5-16.
