If there is any bromantic duo we want to see keep working together, it’s Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve. This weekend, their searing and terrific “Prisoners” opens wide. But before they made that film, they first paired up on “Enemy,” an ambitious mind-bender featuring Gyllenhaal in the two lead roles.
“Whenever I’ve tried to describe it I’ve always said, ‘I wonder if you would even call it a movie.’ In a way you would call it an experience,” the actor told us in a joint interview with Villeneuve before TIFF. But we’ll do our best. Based on a best-seller by acclaimed author José Saramago, and co-starring Sarah Gadon and Mélanie Laurent, the film follows a sullen, increasingly paranoid teacher who believes he’s found his exact doppelganger, and starts to try and figure out who exactly this person is. And it’s just the start of a movie we called “fascinating and spellbindingly disturbing. A riveting examination of intimacy (and the lack thereof), identity, duality and the nether regions of our unconscious desires.“
Twisty and intelligent, and boasting a pretty solid score from Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, A24 will release “Enemy” sometime next year. Check out the teaser and poster below. [Fotogramas]
