Watch: 'The Rite' Trailer Reveals The Vatican Has Touch Screen Enabled Conference Rooms

And The Movie Looks Like Crap

Ever since “The Exorcist” scared the the bejesus out of filmgoers more than three decades ago, filmmakers have been trying, and most failing, to cover the same territory. It seems there are a handful of new exorcism movies that hit every year, and they are usually forgettable, terrible or both.

With that in mind, here’s the trailer for “The Rite,” a story based on true events about “a skeptical young priest sent to the Vatican to be trained in exorcism by an unorthodox tutor following a decision by Pope Benedict XVI to train more exorcists.” Anthony Hopkins, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones and Alice Braga co-star in the tepid-looking film which seems to have some pretty awful looking CGI. Mikael Hafstrom directs. The film will hit theaters on January 28, 2011. Official synopsis and trailer after the jump (or watch it in HD at Apple):

Inspired by true events, “The Rite” follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith. Directed by Mikael Hafstroem (“1408”), “The Rite” is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the devil’s reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth.
