Watch: The 'Twin Peaks'/'Gilmore Girls' Opening Credits Mashup You've Been Waiting For Is Here

Twin Peaks Gilmore GirlsTwin Peaks,” the landmark TV serial borne from the strange and beautiful minds of David Lynch and Mark Frost, has many cultural associations. For starters, pie. And damn fine coffee. There’s also the instantly recognizable theme music by Lynch’s frequent collaborator Angelo Badalamenti, the countless faces of screaming agony that Lara Flynn Boyle gave us over the show’s two-season run and, of course, the unforgettable, long-haired, perpetually denim-clad psycho Killer BOB.

In the years since its initial run on ABC, “Twin Peaks” has gone from a misunderstood cult item to one of the most important shows in the new age of television, influencing everything from HBO’s “True Detective” to AMC’s “The Killing.” On the list of shows that take from Lynch’s and Frost’s defiantly bizarre creation, “Gilmore Girls” would have to be near the bottom. You’d be hard-pressed to find a single point of comparison between the two, save for the fact that they’re both set in idyllic small towns. And yet, someone has done exactly that, and more, by creating a new mash-up of the title credits from both shows. The results are totally, strangely awesome.

Watching the opening ‘Peaks’ titles is a bit disorienting at first without hearing Badalamenti’s mournful signature music, but it’s also a playful bit of pop-culture subversion that yields some unexpected results. It makes it seem, not surprisingly, like a completely different showa show, we’re ashamed to admit, we might actually be curious about watching. If nothing else, it’s a trip to see Carole King and Louise Goffin’s cheery ditty “Where You Lead” juxtaposed against so much rotting Americana, not to mention those grisly abandoned train cars.  Now, let’s get good Killer BOB in there!
