While “Gravity” is undoubtedly a gripping experience, there are some of us at The Playlist that might argue that Paul Greengrass‘ “Captain Phillips” is just as harrowing, thrilling and nerve-wracking as Alfonso Cuaron‘s space spectacle. Either way, if you can make one of the advance screenings this Saturday we urge you to do so, but if not, the film opens next week and it’s worth getting in line for.
Three more clips have splashed online highlighting the electric tension that runs through the movie. Based on a true story, Tom Hanks leads the picture as Rich Phillips, a seasoned cargo ship captain who finds his vessel overtaken by Somali pirates. But where this premise could so easily be one note, the script by Billy Ray finds suspense in Rich struggling to survive this experience, trying to stay one step ahead of his volatile captors. And those pirates, led by Barkhad Abdi are each drawn with their own personalities, giving the film a deeper texture.
“It will take hold and won’t let you go, and it’s one of the most engaging movies of the year,” we wrote in our NYFF review. See it on October 11th. Watch below.
