So the ball continues to roll on the marketing for the latest offering from Korean master Park Chan-wook. Last week brought word of his latest work — a 30 minute short film shot entirely on Apple’s iPhone 4, accompanied by both the first official image and the project’s poster. This week brings the brief yet effective teaser trailer along with a 5-minute behind-the-scenes featurette.
Were you disappointed by the wacky madcap “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK” or frustrated by the underwhelming “Thirst”? Fear not, everyone’s favorite vengeful director is back with the intriguingly experimental “Paranmanjang” (or “Night Fishing” in English). As previously reported, the film was shot on a small budget of 150 million won (about $133,000) and was made with the help of his younger brother and media artist Park Chan-kyong. The film is a whimsical tale of life and death, about a fisherman who becomes entangled in a murder when he catches the body of a woman on his hook.
“Paranmanjang” is scheduled to open in limited theaters on January 27th across South Korea, and will start a run on the festival circuit, unspooling at the Berlin Film Festival next month. It’s definitely one of the most surreal and straight-up strange teasers we’ve seen in a while. While the behind-the-scenes footage is currently only available sans English subtitles, the visuals are a pleasure to watch, to simply feast your eyes on a brilliant filmmaker hard at work on what is bound to be a one-of-a-kind production.
