Climate change. Do you believe in it? You should, you know. But if you don’t, mind if we ask if James Cameron telling you it’s real would change your opinion? Or Matt Damon? Or Jessica Alba? Or Ian Somerhalder? These are not hypothetical questions, not any more, much like “hey, I wonder what happens if a massive hurricane hits New York City?” isn’t a hypothetical question any more. But anything Al Gore can do, James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub and Arnold Schwarznegger can do better, on Showtime, with inexplicable sequences of battleships and Lesley Stahl looking at a lake and saying, “This is a lake?”
Global warming is a serious thing, and it’s good to see serious shows being made about it. It’s just really, really hard to tell if “Years of Living Dangerously” is one or not. The trailer starts off telling us that climate change is definitely real…and then features lots of clips of people going back and forth on that question, along with lots of suggestions that this maybe-real thing is definitely terrible. And here’s Matt Damon in a helicopter to tell you why. And Harrison Ford in a boat. And Thomas Friedman talking to someone in Yemen about water shortages. And Olivia Munn. And people staring at each other across kitchen tables.
We don’t know what is going on with this, which maybe makes it all a clever metaphor for global climate policy. Maybe? All we know is, we’ll be able to find out in April, in eight hour-long episodes. Oh look, there’s Don Cheadle looking at a field and nodding. And America Ferrera looking concerned and nodding. It’s all about the nodding. “Years Of Living Dangerously” starts airing in April.
