With a title like “Dear White People,” you already know that writer/director Justin Simien is getting the knives out. But thankfully, his comedy is carefully cut, with his film taking home the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent this past January, and the film is now headed near you and the first trailer has arrived.
Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Kyle Gallner, Malcolm Barrett, Brittany Curran, Marque Richardson, and Dennis Haysbert make up the ensemble, with the story following a group of African-Americans on a college campus made up of mostly white students. As James Rocchi wrote in his review out of Park City, this is a “brave and bold a debut film” and one that presents “the first film in the career of a writer-director with things to say and the talent, humor and humanity to say them.”
“Dear White People” opens on October 17th. Watch below.
