“Everyone deserves a chance, this is America” says one of the many men looking for hope featured in the fantastic Jesse Moss-helmed documentary “The Overnighters” —it’s on our list of the Best Documentaries of 2014 So Far. It’s a line that can also act as a sort of mission statement for Pastor Jay Reinke, who risks a lot to help men with troubled pasts, men that his community would rather see gone. The film’s first trailer has arrived online, indicating the dilemmas at the heart of this film.
While at first glance "The Overnighters may appear to be another documentary concerning the perils of chasing oil or the fabled American Dream, Moss’ film, as we said in our A- Sundance review, “is actually about morality, consequence, and the choices we make.” We’re very big fans of the film —our capsule review for the Best of 2014 So Far is quoted in the trailer— so we hope it gets the widespread recognition and audience it deserves.
“The Overnighters” is released by Drafthouse Films, and will open in New York City on October 10th and Los Angeles on October 31st. Watch below.
