Unless you’ve come down with a serious case of superhero movie fatigue, chances are you saw “Captain America: Civil War” this past weekend. While it’s only the second jumbo-sized superhero smackdown to grace movie screens in 2016, critical notices (and our own feature) have suggested that ‘Civil War’ is a brighter, funnier and ultimately more enjoyable film than the comparatively dour “Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” That the film is already a box office smash should surprise absolutely no one, but “Civil War” also succeeds at tying together the many disparate elements of the M.C.U. without ever feeling like it’s doing so strictly for the sake of fan service.
For those who’ve seen the film, a new supercut has taken the time to assemble every Easter egg, Marvel-related in-joke or tangential cultural reference that you might have overlooked during the long and busy runtime of ‘Civil War.’ Some tidbits are more enlightening than others: I did not know, for instance, that some of the movie’s more memorable images, like Cap clobbering Tony Stark until his Iron Man mask is nothing more than shards of glass and steel, or Ant-Man riding on one of Hawkeye’s flying arrows, were lifted more or less directly from the pages of the source material. The movie’s teasing of Black Panther’s enigmatic story is also a highly intriguing development, offering us a taste of a world we’ll surely get more in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming standalone film. In the cameo department, there’s obviously the requisite appearance by Stan Lee (except this one’s kind of lame) as well as an amusing appearance from Jim Rash to remind you that before the Russo Brothers started directing superhero flicks, they were arguably best known for their work on “Community.” It’s great stuff for any committed Marvel nerd, (I personally would have liked to see a bit more on Frank Grillo’s Crossbones) though those who haven’t seen the film yet might want to wait until they have to check this one out.
