Making his feature film directorial debut with the found footage “Cloverfield,” and then turning heads with his excellent remake of “Let Me In,” Matt Reeves‘ career so far has been spent confounding expectations. And that’s why, even with the gig of helming a blockbuster sequel, we have hopes that “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” isn’t just your average tentpole. And even with the pressure of delivering for his first, big budget studio gig, Reeves remains pretty excited about the opportunity that has landed in front of him.
“To dive into this world was something that I couldn’t resist. There were a million things I’d never done before. The idea of doing motion capture and the idea of doing effects on this level were things I’d never done. The relief was that, at its center, it was exactly the same as making any movie,” Reeves told Collider earlier this year. “But then, after you’ve done that, you have to do a number of really strange things, like shooting the scene again without the actors. All of those things were added complexities that were challenging, but that was part of the thrill of it. It was really like jumping out of an airplane and saying, ‘I’m doing this. I’m just gonna do this.’ I’ve gotta tell you, I would never jump out of an airplane, but I was happy to jump into this.”
How it turns out, we’ll know if a few weeks, but a new trailer is here to help give the movie one last push before it lands in theatres. And it gives you what you need to know — apes and humans aren’t getting along, and it’s going to lead to a showdown that lends itself to blockbuster spectacle. But we trust that Reeves will bring some brains to the equation, with the film having to hold up against Rupert Wyatt‘s very solid “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes.”
‘Dawn’ comes on July 11th. Watch below.
