Woody Allen might be nearing the age of 80, but his creative output has not slowed down one bit. but what has slowed down, considerably, are his on-screen appearances. Since 2004, he’s directed ten films and has just finished production on his eleventh (“Magic in the Moonlight”), but he has only starred in two of them (“Scoop,” “To Rome With Love”). So, when it was first discovered that he would be co-starring with John Turturro in “Fading Gigolo,” we were delightfully surprised. Not only is it just his second acting gig in eight years, but also his first film appearance since 2000 of which he has not directed himself.
The latest trailer for “Fading Gigolo” suggests that Allen has not lost a step. He plays Murray, a book dealer who winds up pimping John Turturro’s character, Fioravante. They initially get involved in the gigolo business when Murray’s dermatologist announces that she’s looking for someone to participate in a threesome with her and her voluptuous best friend, Selima (Sofia Vergara). Soon, Murray and Fioravante will both discover that they have started a highly lucrative business, a business that is not without its consequences.
Directed by John Turturro, the film premiered at TIFF last fall where it got a mixed reaction from one of our own. Still, with a cast that includes the aforementioned Turturro, Allen and Vergara, as well as Vanessa Paradis, Sharon Stone and Liev Schreiber, “Fading Gigolo” definitely seems worth a watch.
