The 'Watchmen' Debate Continues: Drew McWeeney Vs. David Poland on G4

Ex-AICN writer and now Hitflix editor Drew McWeeny faced off against Movie City News editor David Poland on the video-gamey-like show G4. In many ways, it was nerd vs. non-nerd. McWeeny wrote an effusive near 4,000 word review praising “Watchmen” like manna from the skies and Poland wrote a less favorable review of the film and has suggested on his blog that the Zack Snyder film will be lucky if it breaks even now that it has underperformed at the box-office.

Their TV arguments are basically the same, Poland says its too “literal” and “it was a amazing three dimensional version of the book, but nothing deeper, nothing more clever and none of the relationships didn’t work.” McWeeny says its more of a “visual equivalent,” and a meta exercise, “it’s a comment on super hero film… he’s riffing on what a super hero film is or can be.” Poland also argues that how can one really care for the characters?

You know how we feel about it and frankly, we haven’t heard a convincing argument to the contrary. McWeeny is a pleasant and smart guy, but he’s giving the film waaaay too much credit in our opinion. Even the G4 host thought the music was terrible. And both Poland and McWeeny don’t think it’s going to be a huge hit for Warner Bros. In fact, Poland thinks the big financial winner is going to be 20th Century Fox. But anyhow, check it out and see for yourself.
