The world got just a little bit closer to its inevitable future of being ruled by overlord Shia Labeouf this weekend, with the opening of his new action thriller, “Eagle Eye,” which came in first at the box office with a strong showing of $29.2 million.
The Diane Lane, Richard Gere love story for old people, “Nights in Rodanthe” came in second with an impressive $13.6 million. Kirk Cameron’s christian-themed firefighting drama, “Fireproof” opened in fourth place with $6.5 million, on only 839 screens, and played especially well in the heartland (go figure). But Fox Searchlight’s latest film, “Choke” pulled in a so-so $1.4 million on 462 screens. For some unknown reason audiences keep going out to see the horrid Sam Jackson thriller, “Lakeview Terrace,” as it pulled in $7 million in its second week out, but Dane Cook and Kate Hudson’s new comedy, “My Best Friend’s Girl” finished in the 8th slot, with a measly $3.8 million.
But the biggest disappointment of this depressing weekend at the box office has to be “Miracle at St. Anna,” the latest film from Spike Lee, which opened to only $3.5 million.
