Weekend Box Office: Tyler Perry Remains King/Queen; Jonas Brothers' Purity Rings Shat On

Hell, Tyler Perry don’t need major promotion. Tyler Perry don’t need magazine covers. Tyler Perry don’t need critics. Tyler Perry don’t even need Wolverine. In the first quiet weekend of the new year, Perry’s “Madea Goes To Jail” held on to the top spot with an estimated $16.5 million. While it’s a steep fall-off from last week, the comedy/drama/sermon brought its total to $64.9 million in two weeks, helping it fend off the “phenom” known as the Jonas Brothers. “The Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” was considered by many to be a potential $30 million opener, but instead settled in behind Perry with $12.7 million. We’re guessing the difference between this and the massive “Hannah Montana” concert movie showing were the absence of creepy, single thirty year old men. Way to ignore a potential demographic, Jonas Brothers.

$12.2 million at #3 for “Slumdog Millionaire,” which crossed the $100 million mark recently and enjoyed a nice post-Best Picture bump. Adding nearly 700 theaters will do that, though. “Taken,” meanwhile, AGAIN posted the lowest percentage drop in the top ten, landing at #4 with $9.9 million, bringing its total to $108 million. Meanwhile, further down at #8, FOX debuted “Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li” to $4.7 million in a smaller-than-usual wide release, casting doubt on the oh-so-promising action hero future of Mr. Chris Klein. At the very depths of the chart, the Weinstein Company dumped immigration drama “Crossing Over” in nine screens, and it did a fairly middling $8,400 per screen for a total of $75,600. You’d think Harrison Ford’s presence would guarantee an extra zero or two, though I doubt the families who loved “The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull” were into Ray Liotta buttfucking immigrants.
