There is no one who can turn a phrase better than Werner Herzog, and he's one of the few people we could actually say "we could listen to him read the phone book" and mean it. It seems every now and then a morsel of genius falls out of his brain and onto the Internet and today is no different.
In a clip from the documentary "On the Ecstasy of Ski-Flying: Werner Herzog in Conversation with Karen Beckman" that has been knocking around the interwebs since 2007 but is picking up steam today, the director's discussion about humor and jokes takes a Herzog-ian turn as he explains that he takes everything (and everybody) super literally. “For me a chair is a chair — and I do not reference to other possibilities…For me, a man is a man," he said. "I cannot distinguish a gay man from a straight man. After 35 years of knowing John Waters I turn to my wife and I said to her, ‘I have the feeling that this man is gay'…which is in a way wonderful, because I took him as John Waters. And I love the man, I love him dearly, he’s a wonderful…he’s the boldest of the bold filmmakers. I wish I had the guts of this man, and he’s very, very dear to my heart — but for me this is a man. Yes, a man is a man.” It gets better kids. [FilmDrunk]
