'Blade: Trinity' Wesley Snipes Denies Rumor That He Tried To Strangle Director On Set

Wesley Snipes became a huge star following the success of the “Blade” movies, but with the release of “Blade: Trinity” came a few weird stories about Snipe’s behavior on set. And we’re not talking about sending live rats to your castmates like you’re Jared Leto, but refusing to come to set, or even strangling director David S. Goyer on set. Now, 16 years later, Wesley Snipes is responding to the rumors.

In an interview with The Guardian to promote his recent roles in films like “Coming 2 America” and “Dolemite is my Name,” the actor addressed the longstanding rumor that Patton Oswalt alleged back in a 2012 interview. “Let me tell you one thing. If I had tried to strangle David Goyer, you probably wouldn’t be talking to me now,” Snipes said. “A Black guy with muscles strangling the director of a movie is going to jail, I guarantee you. … Did I go to jail for strangling him? Never happened.”

Originally, Oswalt claimed that Snipes tried to strange Goyer, and he also claimed that at one point, Goyer hired some bikers to pose as his personal security to intimidate Snipes. Oswalt also said Snipes only communicated with the director “through Post-it notes” signed “From Blade.” For his part, Wesley Snipes call into question Oswalt as the source, jokingly saying he is “a reliable authority on me,” and goes on to address why he thinks people believed such rumors so easily.

“This is part of the challenges that we as African-Americans face here in America – these microaggressions,” Snipes added. “The presumption that one white guy can make a statement and that statement stands as true! Why would people believe his version is true? Because they are predisposed to believing the Black guy is always the problem. And all it takes is one person, Mr. Oswalt, who I really don’t know. I can barely remember him on the set, but it’s fascinating that his statement alone was enough to make people go: ‘Yeah, you know Snipes has got a problem.'”
