Do the Golden Globes even exist if there isn’t a ceremony televised to the world? Or a red carpet? Or those fabulous parties that were spread out around the Beverly Hilton Hotel? The 2022 Golden Globe Awards were handed out in a private ceremony that focused on the changes the organization has made since coming under fire for its lack of African American or Black members, among other issues, last year. “West Side Story” won three honors including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. “The Power of the Dog” took three honors including Best Director, Jane Campion, and Best Picture – Drama.
Will Smith won Best Actor in a Film – Drama for “King Richard,” Nicole Kidman was a surprise Best Actress in a Drama winner for “Being the Ricardos” while Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for “West Side Story” and Kodi Smit-McPhee won Best Supporting Actor for “The Power of the Dog.” Andrew Garfield won Best Actor in a Film – Musical or Comedy for “tick, tick…BOOM!” while DeBose’s “West Side” co-star, Rachel Zegler, wins Best Actress in a Film-Musical or Comedy.
Among other notable film winners, “Encanto” took Animated Film, “Drive My Car” took Best Non-English Language Film, Hans Zimmer won Best Original Score for “Dune” and “No Time To Die” from “No Time To Die,” written by Billie Eilish and Finneas, won Best Original Song.
On the television side, “Succession” Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Jeremy Strong), and Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series (Sarah Snook). M.J. Rodriguez made history as the first trans woman to win a Golden Globe taking Best Actress in a Drama Series for the final season of “Pose.”
“Hacks” took Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Jean Smart took Best Actress in that category. Jason Sudeikis got “Ted Lasso” on the board with Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. “The Underground Railroad” won best Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television while “Mare of Easttown’s” Kate Winslet and “Dopesick’s” Michael Keaton took the acting honors in that category.
