Whit Stillman's 'The Last Days Of Disco' Now Available On Hulu, Still No Sign Of Criterion Release

Bourgey, urban haute indie auteur Whit Stillman is back! Ok, let’s face it, not really. It’s just the 1998 urban chronicle of the ’70s New York Disco scene, “The Last Days of Disco,” is now available in its entirety for free on Hulu.com. With Janus Film’s via their Criterion Collection dragging their feet with the DVD release of Stillman’s last film, Hulu.com has now become the only place to view “Last Days of Disco,” for those without access to the now out-of-print VHS version (we covet our copy).

Stillman confirmed last summer that a Criterion release was in the works for the film but it seemed a ways off (entangled contract talks). Hulu recently posted Stillman’s first film, “Metropolitan,” a wry comedy of manners which follows a group of young socialites while they navigate their way through the New York debutante ball season.

Despite the fact that Stillman has fallen completely off the map since the 1998 release of ‘Disco,’ he is apparently still working on his the Jamaica project, now titled, “Dancing Mood” and his other long-gestating/ going-nowhere project “Little Green Men,” based on the novel by Christopher Buckley. Stillman says he’s also written many other things, but doesn’t divulge what those films are, but does say ‘Mood,’ is close to getting financing (note he said that three years ago too). “I think, the one that is set to go, as soon as the financing falls into place, is the Jamaica project. The characters are black Jamaicans in Kingston in the early ’60s.” [Hulu via Vulture]
