The true-story centers on Rodney Hyden, a Southern family man wiped out during the Great Recession who hatches a plot to find 70 pounds of cocaine buried on Culebra, an island of Puerto Rico. When the feds get wind of the $2 million bounty things take a turn for the worse. The doc debuted at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival before landing on Netflix. Love’s documentary received mixed reviews landing just a 44 grade on Metacritic and a 78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Deadline, the film will be adapted by Peter Steinfeld (“Analyze That,” “21”) and center on the band of misfits Hyden recruits to try and retrive the “treasure.” Ferrell will produce alongside Jessica Elbaum and David Permut (“Hacksaw Ridge”). There is no director at this time.
This will be the second feature Ferrell has made with Netflix after “Eurovision,” the David Dobkin-directed comedy based on the massive global singing contest. That picture is currently in post-production. Ferrell recently shot Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s “Downhill,” an English-language adaptation of Ruben Östlund’s “Force Majure,” that is set to debut at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival next month.
It’s been quite a year for Ferrell behind the camera. He’s an Executive Producer on HBO’s “Succession,” Netflix’s “Dead to Me” and “Booksmart.” He was also full fleged producer on the box office and critical hit, “Hustlers.”
