Will Smith is a bit of a conundrum. He’s choosy, but sometimes the choices he makes can be head-scratching, or maybe he’s just had terrible luck. In retrospect, passing on “Independence Day: Resurgence” was a smart move, but he might’ve regretted turning down Quentin Tarantino for “Django Unchained.” As for “Suicide Squad,” sure, it made a lot of money, but it was widely thrashed by critics and Smith was one of the least memorable characters in it. Deadline reports that the actor is circling Tim Burton‘s live-action redo of the classic animated movie. Ehren Kruger, who is no stranger to franchises having penned multiple “Transformers” movies, is writing the script, and it’s not clear what Smith’s role would be, but surely he can do better than this? Undoubtedly, the allure of starring in an inevitable, global Disney hit is attractive, but I would hope there are more interesting projects he can choose from.
All that said, nothing is set in stone, as scheduling might be tricky between Smith gearing up to make “Bad Boys For Life,” but it’ll be intriguing to see how this plays out. Update: Variety says Tom Hanks has been offered the villain role.
