So far, the marketing for Netflix’s upcoming fantasy series “The Witcher” hasn’t been the most, uh, interesting. For the most part, the streaming service seems to think that showing a wigged Henry Cavill swinging a sword is enough to sell the series. Well, thankfully, the last trailer for the series is showing another side of the story, the “Game of Thrones”-esque parts.
Outside of a few quick shots involving people moving their hands around in a vaguely magical way, you wouldn’t think there was anything in “The Witcher” that was mystical or supernatural at all, based on this new trailer. The footage seems to rely heavily on the political machinations of the world the series inhabits. What is also apparent is that Henry Cavill is fighting quite a few bad guys and there’s a huge war happening between two forces that explodes in a ‘Battle of the Bastards’-style collision course. It looks interesting and definitely has an epic feel, but fans of “The Witcher” novels and video games will be quick to tell people that the story is most definitely not a rehash of ‘Thrones.’
As mentioned, Cavill is the star of the series, playing Geralt of Rivia. He stars alongside Jodhi May as the Queen of Cintra, Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as her husband, knight Eist, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, leader of the magical academy at Aretuza, and her novice sorcerers Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) and Sabrina (Therica Wilson-Read).
Season 1 of “The Witcher” is launching on December 20. And Netflix is so sure it’s going to be a hit, the streaming service has already begun work on Season 2. You can watch the final trailer for the series below, as well as a silly video with Cavill reading from the novels.
