With most theaters still closed due to the spread of COVID-19, studios are weighing options and making tough decisions. While some studios are just sending films to Premiere VOD (PVOD), Paramount continues to sell off a large number of its titles to various streaming services instead. The studio previously took the likes of Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” to Netflix, as well as the upcoming Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds time travel movie, formerly titled “Our Name is Adam.” Joining that group of films – which also includes Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” – is the Michael B. Jordan vehicle “Without Remorse,” which has now been sold to Amazon.
According to Variety, Amazon Studios is in final negotiations to buy the worldwide rights to the film, a Tom Clancy thriller starring Michael B. Jordan as U.S. Navy SEAL John Clark. The film is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime, which would put it alongside another major Tom Clancy property, the John Krasinki-starring espionage series “Jack Ryan,” the titular CIA analyst.
Aside from Jack Ryan, Clark the most frequently adapted and rebooted Tom Clancy tough military guys, the role having been previously played by the likes of Willem Dafoe in “Clear and Present Danger” and Liev Schreiber in “The Sum of All Fears.” “Without Remorse” follows Clark as he embarks on a mission to exact vengeance for the murder of his wife. Perhaps not the most original of missions, but hopefully one that will move Amazon’s acquired Clancy properties out of the realm of U.S. military interventionism.
With the ongoing closure of cinemas and the increasing number of indefinite delays of theatrical releases, the industry is continuing to be hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic, with no exceptions among the major studios, as streaming and VOD releases seem to be the only route out besides indefinite delays.
