'Wonder Woman 1984' Pushed Back 7 Months To Summer 2020

Sorry DC fans, but you’re going to have to wait until 2020 to get your next dose of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

In a surprise move, it was announced today that “Wonder Woman 1984,” the highly-anticipated sequel to 2017’s breakout superhero film, has been pushed from its original release date of November 1, 2019 to June 5, 2020. And according to WB and the film’s star, the move has nothing to do with any behind-the-scenes issues and is all due to an opening that was created in the release schedule.

The move was first confirmed by Gadot, who went to Twitter to post, “Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put ‘Wonder Woman’ back to its rightful home. June 5, 2020. Be there or be square!!!”

After that tweet, a WB exec seconded Gadot’s sentiments and said (via THR), “We had tremendous success releasing the first ‘Wonder Woman’ film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”

It appears that Warner Bros. doesn’t want to take any chances with their flagship superhero film franchise. After the surprising success of the first “Wonder Woman” film in June 2017, earning over $821 million worldwide and pleasing fans and critics alike, WB just doesn’t want to test the fall waters with the heroine and would rather put her back where she’s comfortable — June.

While many people might see this as a warning of some rough waters between filmmaker Patty Jenkins and Warner Bros., as of now, there’s nothing to point to that. Filming seemed to be completed without drama and it’s far too early to discuss lengthy reshoots. It appears that this comes down to scheduling.

There are a couple other factors that could have contributed to this move for “Wonder Woman 1984.” First, Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joaquin Phoenix “Joker” film is scheduled to hit theaters October 4, 2019, so it was unlikely that both “Joker” and ‘WW84’ would open less than a month apart. Not even Marvel Studios is crazy enough to do that, as they routinely put 3 months between films, at least. And June is actually 4 months after the release of Margot Robbie’s “Birds of Prey,” which WB/DC scheduled for February 7, 2020.

This leaves WB with only two DCEU films for 2019, with April bringing “Shazam!” and October bringing the aforementioned “Joker.”

The move came after WB announced that Mark Wahlberg’s on-again, off-again film “The Six Billion Dollar Man” was pulled from the release schedule. The absence of that film is the “changing landscape” that Gadot and WB seem to be pointing to.

“Wonder Woman 1984” hits theaters on June 5, 2020. Hopefully.
