'Wonder Woman 1984' First Look: Chris Pine Is Back And We Have So Many Questions

The filmmaker that has the weight of the entire DC film universe on her back is currently in production on the follow-up to her massively successful “Wonder Woman.” So far, all the news surrounding “Wonder Woman 1984” (that’s the best you could come up with, WB?), has been great. We have a new time period (still way before the Snyder-verse mess) and an intriguing villain played by Kristin Wiig. Well, thanks to Warner Bros., we know a little bit more about the film. Apparently, Steve Trevor is back!

This morning, Warner Bros. shared a picture of actor Chris Pine on the set of the new superhero film. He’s decked out in all his ‘80s glory, including the requisite Members Only jacket. “But wait a minute! Isn’t he dead?” you ask. Well, if you watched “Wonder Woman,” you might be asking that exact question because Pine’s character, Steve Trevor, famously exploded in an airplane, which led to Wonder Woman finding the strength to defeat Ares.

So, there are a few options here, and none are very satisfactory. All the press release says about Pine is, “And Chris Pine returns as Steve Trevor.” Not helpful.

First, perhaps this is a fantasy or dream that Diana Prince has, remembering her long-lost love. Okay, that’s fine on the surface. But Pine’s Members Only jacket throws a wrench in that theory. Does Wonder Woman always put her dream subjects in period-appropriate attire? Because you would think that she would imagine him exactly how he looked when he died.

Second option is that he’s alive. Sure, that invalidates the ending of the first film and makes it strange that Wonder Woman cares about that stupid picture so much. However, this is comic books and superheroes and gods and all that. So, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Does that mean Trevor is the hottest looking 90ish-year-old man on the planet? Or maybe he now has superpowers that made him stay young?

Lastly, and probably most likely, is that this isn’t Steve Trevor and it’s some sort of shapeshifter taking his appearance to screw with Diana. That’s a cop out, for sure.

Overall, it’s still nice to see that Pine is back on set, in whatever capacity. His role in the first film was one of the highlights, and his chemistry with Gal Gadot is undeniable. We’ll just have to wait and see how they bring good ol’ Steve Trevor back when “Wonder Woman 1984” (Did I miss the other 1,982 sequels to the original? I kid, I kid…seriously, it’s a bad title) comes out November 1, 2019.
