Oh, so you think you have your summer movie watching schedule all mapped out? Well, prepare to make some adjustments as the arthouse near you is changing up the game.
Perhaps the biggest news of the bunch is that Wong Kar-Wai‘s “The Grandmaster” (now evidently titled “Grandmasters“) has been given an August 23rd wide release date by The Weinstein Company. It’s a bit of a curious move as it will position the movie against Edgar Wright‘s “The World’s End” and YA franchise “The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones.” But most notably, that late August date has not been good to the distributor with both John Hillcoat‘s “Lawless” and the comedy “Our Idiot Brother” kinda fizzling in the late summer slot in recent years. But hey, at least it’s coming, right?
Meanwhile, the Eli Roth-produced and starring horror “Aftershock” will jolt your bones on May 10th. The premise for this Chilean-set movie finds a massive earthquake unleashing all kinds of killer mayhem, so genre fans should be pleased they’ll continue to have options this summer. Speaking of Chile, Michael Cera‘s indie “Crystal Fairy” — in which he plays an American in the country looking for the ultimate high — will land on July 12th.
Lastly, Sundance sensation “Fruitvale” has been moved from a previously slated slot in October to a July 26th date. So if you need a break from CGI melting your face off, this tough drama should be a nice antidote.
