It was earlier this week that we posited that Woody Allen's next effort "Nero Fiddled" would skip Cannes and make a splashy premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which seemed like a good wager considering the film is set in Italy. But it seems the film might forgo the red carpet altogether and just head straight into theaters.
Exhibitor Relations has tweeted that "Nero Fiddled" has been set by Sony Pictures Classics for a June 22nd release date. It essentially sees the arthouse shingle hoping to duplicate the success of last year's "Midnight In Paris," which isn't a bad way to go at all. While plot details are locked down, the film features a ridiculous ensemble — Alison Pill, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page, Judy Davis, Penelope Cruz — and is said to be made of four vignettes, with two in English and two in Italian, though that remains unconfirmed.
The film will hit theaters the same weekend in limited release as "Your Sister's Sister" with Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt, while at the multiplex "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," "Brave" and "Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World" will be battling it out. But Woody's films are generally known for their long legs, so if it it doesn't make huge waves that first weekend out, it's likely going to be lingering at your arthouse well through the end of the summer.
