Don’t lose your feathers all at once when I tell you that “The Angry Birds Movie” earned over $345 million at the box office. Not a bad start in the movie biz for mobile game maker Rovio, and obviously, they aren’t done yet.
The company announced in an earnings report that a sequel to “The Angry Birds Movie” is in the works. They note that in addition to strong showing at the multiplex, the movie did great business on home video too, where it went to number one digitally on iTunes (the film hit DVD and Blu-ray this month).

“With the excellent performance of our games portfolio and the fantastic movie, the Angry Birds brand is flying high and we are seeing positive EBIT and cash flow development, while fulfilling our mission to create world class entertainment,” Rovio CEO Kati Levoranta said. “We currently have several exciting new games and other projects in development, including new IP, and we have started planning the sequel to ‘The Angry Birds Movie.’”
Basically, that’s a lot of fancy big word business speak for: “This made lots of money, thus we will try to make more.”
There’s no word yet on a director or returning stars (Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, Jillian Bell, Danielle Brooks, Romeo Santos, and Smosh were part of the cast the first time around) but I’m sure some phone calls are starting to be made.
