When Paul Verhoeven followed up “Basic Instinct” with the strip club drama “Showgirls,” the film became a huge flop, hated by audiences and critics alike, and even ending the career of several people. But everyone loves a comeback story, and the first trailer for the upcoming documentary “You Don’t Nomi” is here to try and convince you that “Showgirls” was not only a good film, but it became a cult classic.
The trailer for Jeffrey McHale‘s provocative documentary looks at every interpretation of “Showgirls,” what made it fail, and what exactly is it about the film that some people still enjoy so much. Despite the film making less than $38 million off its $45 million budget, the film became a midnight staple alongside films like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and “The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert,” even inspiring a parody musical.
The documentary premiered at Tribeca last year, where it got mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the documentary’s quick pace and entertaining exploration of fandom, even if it won’t convince skeptics of the merits of the original “Showgirls.”
The synopsis for “You Don’t Nomi” reads:
“In ‘YOU DON’T NOMI’, a chorus of film critics and fervent devotees explore the complicated afterlife of 1995’s biggest film flop, Paul Verhoeven’s salacious Showgirls, from disastrous release to cult adoration and extraordinary redemption. The film features Adam Nayman (Vice Guide to Film), April Kidwell (I, Nomi) and Peaches Christ (Milk) as well as archive interview footage with the cast and crew of ‘Showgirls’.“
The film will be available on-demand on June 9. You can watch the trailer for “You Don’t Nomi” below:
