After watching the first season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” you probably weren’t a big fan of Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), the icy wife Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and one half of the couple who are basically the legal captors of June/Offred (Elisabeth Moss). And, frankly, you’d be justified. During the second season, however, series creator and show runner Bruce Miller has turned Serena into, arguably, the most well rounded character on the critically acclaimed program. Miller’s ability to adapt Margret Atwood‘s classic novel into , but a ton of the credit also has to go to Strahovski for her multi-layered and crazy impressive performance.

The Aussie native sat down to appear on the Four Quadrant podcast just in time to discuss the ninth episode of the 13 episode season. And, be warned, there are major spoilers in our conversation because of the events that occur with Mrs. Wateford in the past two episodes. Strahovski also discusses her unique perspective on Serena and Offred’s relationship, Serena’s view on the long-term prospects for the authoritarian state she’s helped fashion, why Serena is an “island,” how she justifies Offred’s disrespect and the backstory Miller informs her of to justify Serena’s actions (Strahovski says Miller will remark “It has to be Yvonne proof.”).
Again, if you do not want certain topics from episodes eight and nine of season two spoiled you should bookmark this podcast until you have watched those episodes.

If you’re a true fan of “The Handmaid’s Tale” this is, however, a must-listen episode as Strahovski provides some fascinating insight to what will likely be another Emmy-winning season.
