The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One — a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called "Judges" who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge — a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of "Slo-Mo" experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.
So goes the official synopsis for "Dredd," the Pete Travis-directed comic book adaptation that made many at Comic-Con jizz in their pants when it screened on Wednesday. And it's pretty easy to see why in this new clip from the movie. Playing like a Zack Snyder wet dream boner jam, this nearly entirely slo-motion clip is an orgy of violence porn. In the scene (which doesn't waste an opportunity to show some jiggling 3D boobs), Dredd busts into a cheap apartment and lays waste to a bunch of drug users/dealers/whatever with the camera making sweet soft love to each in slow-motion through the cheek/stomach/wherever shot that ends with an ejaculation of blood spurts. In 3D! We really hope the movie isn't 90 minutes of this.
Our man on the ground at Comic-Con called the movie "a video game procedural tied to great visuals, but one without deeper substance to make its experience remotely meaningful" and this clip seems to bolster that position, along with the film's "glib amorality with which it depicts the (in)significance of human life." As for Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby? Well, they barely have any dialogue but it looks like they know their way around a gun. But we will say that Slo-Mo looks like a good time on a Friday night if you're not getting shot up using it.
Anyway, "Dredd" opens on September 21st.
