Perhaps the most ill-advised part of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was having Jared Leto‘s Joker say the now-infamous line “We live in a society” during one of the trailers for the extended, restored cut of the film. Now, Zack Snyder has decided to further troll both fans and critics by sharing the full deleted scene on Twitter.
The line in question comes in during an alternate version of the very end of the film’s epilogue, set in the “Knightmare” post-apocalyptic alternate timeline previously seen in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” As Batman contemplates forming an alliance with Joker while simultaneously warning him that he will someday honor a promise he made to Harley Quinn of murdering Joker slowly, the Clown Prince of Crime mocks Batman by saying there’s no honor where they are because “we live in a society where honor is a distant memory.” The clip ends with Joker doing a horrendous laugh as he asks Batman who he thinks screamed loudest “the girl, or the boy,” possibly referring to Lois Lane and her future child.
Neither one of these lines are in the final Snyder Cut on HBO Max, though Snyder didn’t really explain why, he did explain that it was all Leto’s idea. “We went back and forth a bit, and I’ll give Jared credit for that little ad-lib there because it was really, really beautiful,” Snyder said recently.
Of course, this isn’t the only thing that Snyder toyed with adding to his 4-hour-long cut that ultimately didn’t make it in. He previously said that he also considered having Ryan Reynolds suit up as Green Lantern, and nearly quit the film over Warner Bros.‘s refusal to let him add John Stewart’s Green Lantern in the epilogue.
