'Zatanna': Emerald Fennell To Write The DC Superhero Film For WB

Emerald Fennell is enjoying quite a bit of awards success in 2021 since the release of her revenge thriller, “Promising Young Woman,” is picking up awards left and right and earned several Oscar nominations. But even though she’s still reveling in that success, she has apparently already lined up her next film project, which sees the filmmaker make the leap into superhero stories with “Zatanna.”

According to Deadline, Fennell is signed on to write the script for a “Zatanna” film. However, it’s unclear if she will eventually also take on the role of director, as well. “Zatanna” is a fairly unique superhero tale as it isn’t your typical capes and cowls sort of story. The film will likely follow the comic books and tell the story of a superhero magician that has teamed up with the likes of Batman, Superman, and others to help save the day using her magical powers. Think “Doctor Strange” but more traditional magic and less sorcery. She’s also been linked to the Justice League Dark team, which might feed into that film project if it ever comes to fruition. Or maybe it’ll tie into the recently reported “Constantine” TV show?

It’s not a huge shocker that “Zatanna” is coming to life on the big screen. Earlier this month, it was revealed in an AT&T presentation that a project featuring the character was in the works, but there wasn’t any clue as to if it was a film or TV project and who might be attached to tell the story.

In addition to “Promising Young Woman,” Fennell is probably best known as the head writer for Season 2 of “Killing Eve,” which continued that series’ trend of strong critical acclaim and big viewership for BBC America. And interestingly, Fennell is an actress, as well, currently seen in “The Crown.”

Obviously, it’s too early to know when “Zatanna” might make her live-action debut, but with Fennell attached, we’re pretty damn excited.
