Well, it can't be said that Ruben Fleischer is being predictable with his movie choices. After breaking out with the horror comedy "Zombieland," he's gone on to direct a zany buddy movie in "30 Minutes Or Less," and is currently finishing up the period gangster flick "Gangster Squad," which recently underwent reshoots following the tragic events in Aurora, Colorado over the summer. And for his next move, Fleischer will take on a video game.
Vulture reports that the helmer has signed on to produce and direct the long developing "Spy Hunter" for Warner Bros. This one has been kicking around the studio lot for a while now, attracting directors and stars like John Woo, Paul W. S. Anderson and Dwayne Johnson over the years but never getting anywhere. Back in 2010, Chad St. John of "Motor City" fame (the movie that just sputtered out at the studio) penned a draft, but Fleischer will be seeking out screenwriters for a fresh take.
If you're wondering why WB is so gung ho on this still, especially since it hasn't been on a game console since Playstation 2, "Spy Hunter" is actually returning this fall to the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. And from a producer perspective, it's an opportunity to make a movie with cool cars and guns. The game itself doesn't have much to it, as you basically just drive around blowing things up, but then again, that's pretty much the "Fast & Furious" franchise in a nutshell.
Anyway, it sounds like this one still needs more development, so who knows if Fleischer will be the one to make it happen, but a property is a property is a property, which means that by hook or by crook, this will get made at some point.
