“Today and yesterday I was with Ben [Stiller], and today, we continued to break story,” screenwriter/actor and director Justin Theroux said to Movieline about the status of “Zoolander 2” which he’s currently writing. “I have not gotten word from anyone to put pencils down, so I am continuing as though we are proceeding with that film.”
This is of course referring to an tweet last week where Ben Still suggested that Paramount may have passed on “Zoolander 2,” just as they kinda, sorta, not really did on “Anchorman 2” because of the film’s costs.
So what does “breaking story” mean? Essentially: trying to figure out what the story of the movie will actually be, meaning they haven’t got a script because they haven’t even figured out what the main crux of the basic story will be.
These sentiments also echo comments Theroux told Collider yesterday when he said they’ve only figured out the set up thus far and not the rest of the tale. “We’re still breaking story and trying to figure out what’s going to be the funniest version of that movie. The only real difference is that they’re going to be completely irrelevant…. washed them up at the beginning of the movie and hopefully [they] will have to earn some sort of relevance coming back, but yeah we know the beginning…”
Sounds a ways off. Wake us when there’s a green light, we’re getting sick of the he said, studio said nonsense.
