To say “Cowboy Bebop” hasn’t had the easiest journey to the screen would be quite an understatement. Following a couple of failed attempts to develop the story as a feature (one of which was said to be targetting Keanu Reeves for the lead), Netflix officially announced plans for a 10-episode live-action series with the original anime’s director Shinichiro Watanabe on board as a consultant back in 2018. The main cast was unveiled in 2019, and everything seemed to be moving forward nicely when star John Cho (Spike Spiegel) was involved in a “freak accident” while performing a stunt, setting production back over a year.

Though there was reportedly some discussion about recasting the role, Netflix ultimately decided to allow Cho time to recover, and just when filming was ready to resume… COVID-19 reared its ugly head. Fortunately, things were finally able to get back on track last September, and production officially wrapped back in March.

We’ve already had our first glimpse of Spike, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, thanks to a heap of first-look images.

Cowboy Bebop” is exec produced and written by Christopher Yost (“Thor“), who also serves as showrunner along with Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio; Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios; Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc.

In addition to Cho, the cast features Mustafa Shakir (Marvel’s “Luke Cage“) as Spike’s partner Jet Black, Daniella Pineda (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom“) as “bold, brash and unpredictable bounty hunter” Faye Valentine, and Alex Hassell (“Suburbicon“) as the Syndicate’s most notorious hitman and Spike’s arch-enemy, Vicious. As far as we know, Radical Ed has not been cast, leading to speculation that the character’s debut is being saved for a potential second season.
