Cuban actress Ana de Armas has been having a bit of a career renaissance lately after appearing in popular films such as Rian Johnson‘s “Knives Out” and Denis Villeneuve‘s “Blade Runner 2049.” She’ll be seen next in the final Daniel Craig outing as James Bond, “No Time To Die” this October. One of her big potential awards projects is Australian director Andrew Dominik‘s “Blonde,” based on the fictional novel from Joyce Carol Oates that sees de Armas playing the iconic actress Marylin Monore. It also stars Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, and Bobby Cannavale.
Yesterday, Variety announced that Netflix has pushed the film’s release into 2022 with a to-be-announced date. Dashing awards potential for “Blonde” until next year.
“The story of Norma Jeane Baker (Monroe), a woman born to an unwed mother in 1926 who, after being taken into custody by her grandmother and eventually finding work as a pin-up model, becomes the famed starlet immortalized today.”
Monroe is likely best known for her classic films such as “Seven Year Itch,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “Some Like It Hot,” and “The Misfits.” The actress/pin-up model had started as one of Hollywood’s notorious “5’0 clock girls,” essentially sex workers on the studio payroll (assigned to actors and directors) before becoming the famed actress she is known as today.
Director Andrew Dominik is behind pics such as Eric Bana‘s “Chopper,” “Killing Them Softly,” and “The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.” The combination of Dominik and de Armas for “Blonde” almost certainly suggests the film could have done quite well in the festival circuit and could be up for awards consideration. There is a good chance that Netflix might simply have an overabundance of awards caliber projects lined up for 2021, such as Adam McKay‘s “Don’t Look Up” and Jane Campion‘s “Power of The Dog.”
Ana de Armas will co-star alongside former flame Ben Affleck in the erotic thriller “Deep Water” by director Adrian Lyne (“Fatal Attraction“) and reunites with Ryan Gosling in The Russo Brothers‘ big expensive spy flick “The Gray Man” for Netflix. Both are expected to release in 2022.
