The curtain has been drawn on another year at the Berlin Film Festival, and in 2014, it looks like Hollywood made a bigger impression than usual when it came to the awards. While the big prize went to one of the three Chinese films in competition, elsewhere American indie faves took home some major trophies.
The jury, led by former Focus Features honcho James Schamus, handed the Golden Bear to Diao Yinan‘s noir “Black Coal, Thin Ice” (review here—the film also took Best Actor prize for Liao Fan), while coming in right behind for the Silver Bear was Wes Anderson‘s candy box “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (review here). Meanwhile, for Best Director, Richard Linklater was honored for his years-in-the-making, coming of age drama “Boyhood.”
Elsewhere, the well-received “71” (review here) starring Jack O’Connell managed a Special Mention by the Ecumenical Jury (perhaps a disappointment, considering some rumors suggested it was a strong contender for the Golden Bear), while John Michael McDonagh‘s “Calvary” (review here) managed the Panorama prize.
