Bob Iger Confirms Chewbacca For Young Han Solo 'Star Wars' Spinoff Movie

nullWell, obviously. I know that’s what you’re already saying, but nonetheless this latest bit of news speaks volumes about the approach being taken with the ‘Young Han Solo’ movie being developed at Lucasfilm, which will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

During the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference today, Disney honcho Bob Iger detailed the upcoming "Star Wars" slate. “ ‘Rogue One‘…is about a band of rebels plotting to steal the plans to the Death Star. It takes place right before George Lucas’s first film, which came out in 1977," he said. "We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewie. And that’ll come after ‘Star Wars 8’ in 2018. And then there will possibly more thereafter.”

The devil is in the details, and this is the first time we’ve heard the Lord and Miller described as being "about Han Solo and Chewie." And given how much that friendship is at the core of those characters, it makes a lot of sense to go in that direction. And while this is ordinarily the spot where I’d express some degree of wariness about backfilling the cinematic history of these characters, Lord and Miller have proven they can often upend expectations.

Casting is already underway for who will play the young Han, and it’ll be interesting to see who the directors approach filling the role of Chewbacca.

The untitled Han Solo movie opens on May 25th, 2018. [The Wrap]
