The fifth “Indiana Jones” film has been in active development since 2017. Over that time, release dates were announced (and then delayed), writers have come and gone, and rumors came and went about who might star opposite Harrison Ford in the film, but despite the numerous stumbling blocks, it’s clear that Lucasfilm and Disney really want to make a new film in the franchise. And according to Ford, they’re going to be making it sooner than you might think.
While speaking to CBS News, the actor was asked about revisiting his most famous characters, such as Han Solo and, of course, Indiana Jones. The actor let it slip that he’s actually preparing for the next ‘Indy’ film.
“I’m gonna start doing ‘Indiana Jones’ in about two months,” said Ford. “I feel obliged to make sure our efforts are as ambitious as they were when we started.”
Obviously, if “Indiana Jones 5” is going to make its most recently announced release date of July 2021, filming will have to begin sometime around the summer of this year. But the fact that Ford says it’s definitely happening seems to point to the fact that Lucasfilm has settled on a script, which would be good news for the franchise. From all the reports up until now, the script always was the part that kept delaying the production, with numerous writers coming in and trying to help.

Not much is known about the plot of “Indiana Jones 5.” We do suspect that this will be the final film in the franchise for Ford, who isn’t getting any younger, you know. We also know that it’ll be the next film for filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who is completing his work on his remake of “West Side Story” (expected to hit theaters later this year). And while he likely won’t be done with “West Side Story” by this summer, that has never stopped him from filming something else in the meantime. He’s a machine, after all.
As of now, “Indiana Jones 5” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2021.
