Last year, we saw the premiere of “The Many Saints of Newark,” the first spinoff project based in the world of “The Sopranos.” While the idea of the film was met with excitement from fans when it was announced, the film wasn’t very well received by critics and it seemed like fans were mixed with their feelings. All that to say, ‘Many Saints’ seems like a classic case of “be careful what you wish for.” Now, according to the head of HBO, it doesn’t seem like there’s any interest in bringing back “The Sopranos” in any sort of sequel/prequel.

Speaking to THR, HBO/HBO Max boss Casey Bloys talked about the possibility of more ‘Sopranos’ spinoffs in the future. As far as TV series go, the idea of revisiting the world of “The Sopranos” doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to happen. (Sorry, fans of the recent Super Bowl ad from David Chase.)
“I don’t think David has any interest in revisiting ‘The Sopranos,’” said Bloys. “And I would agree with him. It’s a perfect series that I don’t think needs revisiting. But we’ll see what he wants to do next. If your question is about if the Super Bowl ad is some sort of precursor or anything like that, I don’t think so.”
He added, “I don’t know where they left off, whether there were going to be more movies or what, so to your larger question about a ‘Sopranos’ series, there’s nothing there. And with ‘The Many Saints,’ there hadn’t been any conversations about it.”
Chase has talked quite a bit about more ‘Sopranos’ content in the future. Whereas it seemed impossible before, the creator has clearly shown that he’s willing to milk the franchise for more content, if he is inspired to do so. That said, Chase made it seem like HBO was begging for more ‘Sopranos’ spinoffs, but when you hear the head of the studio talk, it would seem like there’s no way it’s going to happen.
Regardless of who you believe, there doesn’t seem to be much interest in either direction about more ‘Sopranos’ content. And let’s be real, that’s probably a good thing.
