Jason Statham Is A 'Hummingbird' In Directorial Debut Of 'Eastern Promises' Writer Steven Knight

Hummingbird“? Is Jason Statham getting all soft on us? Nah, bro. Just get him a towel, and we’ll explain.

Back in the spring, “Eastern Promises” and ”Dirty Pretty Things” scribe Steven Knight set up his directorial debut “Hummingbird,” and it boasted a rather vague logline about an ex-special services soldier turned criminal. Well, it’s now got a star. After playing an elite forces dude in “Killer Elite,” and with “Safe” coming up in which he also plays an elite agent, never one to shy away from a challenge, Jason Statham has now signed on to the film.

With the news, comes a bit more details on the plot. The flick will find Statham playing the aforementioned ex-Special Forces soldier, who journeys to the London criminal underworld where a new identity allows him to become an “avenging angel.” So he’s like Dexter we guess. IM Global are financing the film, and they also backed “Safe,” so it seems they are willing to keep their sandbox small on this one.

We kind of had higher expectations from Knight given his track record, but perhaps there is more to this story than the logline suggests. At least we hope so. But then we remember this is now A Jason Statham Movie and those hopes diminish. Shooting on the $20 million pic will take place in London next year. [Deadline]
