British filmmaker Jeymes Samuel recently made waves with his action-packed western “The Harder They Fall” which focused on iconic black figures of the old west. Samuel is looking to reunite with Netflix for his next project, a superhero film based on Boom! Comics properties “Irredeemable” and its spinoff, “Incorruptible.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is aiming to combine the two comics into a single film with Samuel directing and screenwriter Kemp Powers tackling the script. Powers, of course, worked on Regina King‘s period drama “One Night In Miami” and co-wrote/co-directed Pixar‘s fantastic afterlife animated film, “Soul.” This is a strong creative team out the gate and should give fans of the comics the impression that Netflix is taking the adaptation seriously.
Shawn Carter, aka, Jay-Z is part of the film’s producing team.
If you’re not familiar with the comic book series, here is an official synopsis from Boom! Comics that should give you the gist of the project:
When the Plutonian, the world’s greatest superhero, snaps and turns into the world’s greatest villain, only his former teammates have a chance at stopping his rampage. But while on the run from the world’s most powerful and angry being, will these former teammates discover his secrets in time? How did he come to this? What became of the hope and promise once inside him? What happens to the world when its savior betrays it? What makes a hero irredeemable? An apocalyptic superhero tale by the author of Empire and the multiple Eisner Award-winner Kingdom Come!
The spinoff “Incorruptible” focuses on Max Damage, a supervillain that responds to the Plutonian’s evil by slowly transforming himself into a superhero. It certainly gives big vibes of things like “The Boys” and other mature comic book source material that have violent superhero incarnations.
The comic comes from veteran writer Mark Waid and has been mostly illustrated by Peter Krause.
Another high-profile project at Netflix based on a Boom! comic book property is a live-action feature film adaptation of “BRZRKR” starring Keanu Reeves and being penned by Mattson Tomlin (“The Batman,” “Project Power“). Interestingly, Reeves is co-creator and co-writer of the book series the film is based on.
