New Photos From 'The Silver Linings Playbook,' Jessica Chastain in 'Zero Dark Thirty,' 'Argo' & 'Red Dawn'

Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Film Preview is generally the gift that keeps on giving and after two weeks on newstands, photos from the latest issue have begun to surface. The recent crop we found centers on three highly anticipated films by acclaimed helmers such as David O. Russell, Kathryn Bigelow and actor/director Ben Affleck.

First up a new image of Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in an adaptation of Matthew Quick‘s quirky novel “The Silver Linings Playbook.” Directed by David O. Russell, and his first film since 2010’s “The Fighter,” the dramedy follows a former high school teacher who, after being released from an eight month stint in a mental institution, moves back in with his parents, then seeks to put his life back together. Robert De Niro, Chris Tucker, Taylor Schilling, Shea Whigham, Julia Stiles and Jacki Weaver also co-star with the film due to hit theaters November 21st. Here’s the trailer in case you missed it a few weeks back.

After that a desert-set shot of Jessica Chastain in Kathryn Bigelow‘s “Zero Dark Thirty,” her follow-up to 2009’s Oscar-winning Best Picture “The Hurt Locker.” Largely shrouded in secrecy, we know that the action thriller film is about the special operations forces mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. But with a stellar, A-list cast, who plays who? The first trailer for the film revealed a few glimpses of the cast, but Entertainment Weekly confirms that Chastain and Jason Clarke play CIA operatives while Joel Edgerton plays one of the Navy SEALs. Interviewed by the magazine, screenwriter Mark Boal (who also won an Academy Award for “The Hurt Locker”) says despite the controversies surrounding the film (the Obama Administration was accused of improperly providing Bigelow and her team access to classified information during research for the film), the picture will not show the current Commander-In-Chief in the picture.

“It’s an ensemble of covert ops-teams — ground branch (field operatives), case officers, spies, analysts and operators,” he said. The picture also stars Edgar Ramirez, Kyle Chandler, Mark Strong, Chris Pratt, Scott Adkins, Mark Duplass, Harold Perrineau, Nash Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Fares Fares  and lands dead center in Oscar season on December 19th.

Finally, there’s two new photos of Ben Affleck in “Argo” and one new photo of the “Red Dawn” remake. Taking the helm once more as the lead actor and director, “Argo,” centers on a CIA ‘exfiltration’ specialist (Affleck) who concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador during the Iranian revolution in the 1970s. The picture also starsAlan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Kyle Chandler, Taylor Schilling, Chris Messina, Rory Cochrane and Philip Baker Hall. The picture will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and it opens theatrically on October 12th.

The feature-length debut of legendary stunt coordinator Dan Bradley (the ‘Bourne‘ franchise), “Red Dawn” has been severely delayed because of MGM‘s financial woes. But with those problems now long settled, “Red Dawn,” which stars, Chris Hemsworth, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Tom Cruise‘s son Connor Cruise, finally arrives in theaters on November 21st.
