Look, in the wrong hands, a film about a group of students at a prestigious all-girls school summoning a demon could be pretty lame and uninspired. But when you look at “Seance,” and see the name Simon Barrett attached, suddenly a tried-and-true premise might actually have something unique to offer.

As seen in the trailer for “Seance,” the film follows the aforementioned group of girls as they attempt to investigate the urban legend about a spirit that haunts their school. How would you find out definitively whether or not a spirit is indeed causing problems? Well, obviously, you hold a seance and attempt to speak to the apparition yourself. When will teens in horror movies ever learn?
The film stars Suki Waterhouse, Madisen Beaty, Ella-Rae Smith, Inanna Sarkis, Seamus Patterson, and Marina Stephenson-Kerr. As mentioned, “Seance” is written and directed by Simon Barrett. And if that name rings any bells, it’s probably because he’s worked with filmmaker Adam Wingard as the screenwriter on features such as “You’re Next” and “The Guest,” which are two incredibly underrated genre films. Oh yeah, and he also wrote “The Blair Witch” reboot, but we’re going to forget about that one. “Seance” is the writer’s feature directorial debut.
