Taylor Sheridan rolled into the Sundance Film Festival this week with his directorial debut “Wind River,” which according to our Noel Murray, makes good on the talent of the screenwriter behind “Sicario” and “Hell Or High Water.” But it’s not a surprise that as Sheridan did the rounds in Park City, many were curious about “Soldado,” the sequel the electric “Sicario” that’s now filming.
All we know so far is that the story will continue without Emily Blunt‘s Kate Macer, but as Sheridan explains to Collider, this approach made sense as the next film finds him exploring what happens when Josh Brolin‘s Matt Graver and Benicio Del Toro‘s Alejandro are operating without government officials looking over their shoulder.
“…I had an idea, and I said [to the producers], ‘Look you can’t really do a sequel, but I sure would love to see what happened if these guys didn’t have a chaperone.’ Because basically they’re operating within the United States, so I played with some actual laws that exist and found a way that they could operate more or less legally within the U.S. But they had a chaperone. What happens if they weren’t in the U.S. and they didn’t have a chaperone? How bad or good would that work out?” he said. “You’ve seen ‘Sicario,’ good isn’t going to factor into it too much.”
“I would say if ‘Sicario’ is a film about the militarization of police and that blending over, this is removing the policing aspect from it,” he added.
So, it sounds like Matt and Alejandro will be in foreign country, causing mayhem, with no one to hold them accountable. Our knuckles are turning white already…
No release date for “Soldado,” but we’re eager to see how it turns out.
