As we approach the end of 2018, we tend to take a look at some of the best films of the year. This year, some big names have entered the awards season tussle to see which films will reign supreme. Sadly, one of those films getting mentioned isn’t “Skate Kitchen.” Despite pretty great reviews, the drama about a group of young female skateboarders in New York City flew under the radar for most film fans. But hopefully, HBO is going to change that, as the network is working with the filmmaker behind “Skate Kitchen” for a new series inspired by the underrated 2018 drama.
According to The Wrap, filmmaker Crystal Moselle and producer Lesley Arfin are developing a new HBO comedy series inspired by the film “Skate Kitchen.” The series will follow “a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.”

“As girls we were never brave enough to try skateboarding,” Moselle and Arfin said. “We’re excited to work on a project that could potentially get other girls to feel inspired enough to face their fears, fight the patriarchy and start shredding. Women are changing the game across industries all over this country. Why not add skateboarding to that list?”
Moselle is probably best known for her documentary “The Wolfpack,” which earned the Sundance Grand Jury Prize back in 2015. “Skate Kitchen” is her first foray in the world of narrative film and she has never worked on a series to date.
Arfin, on the other hand, has plenty of experience in TV, having most recently co-created (along with Judd Apatow), produced, and written the Netflix series “Love,” which just recently wrapped up its three season run. She also wrote for HBO’s “Girls,” as well as “Awkward” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”
There’s no word on who will star in the series, or if any of the girls from “Skate Kitchen” will appear. The film was inspired by the real-life group known as Skate Kitchen, and starred the actual members.
No release date has been set, but if we haven’t made it clear enough yet, you really should go watch “Skate Kitchen.”
