While we might automatically think of Guillermo del Toro when we conjure up thoughts of “Pacific Rim,” the franchise’s most recent filmmaker is actually Steven DeKnight, who helmed the sequel, ‘Uprising.’ And recently, on Twitter, the filmmaker opened up about his “Pacific Rim” experience and what his plans were for a possible third film in the franchise. Spoiler alert—it involved a certain skyscraper-sized lizard and his ape friend.
When asked if he ever envisioned a way to crossover the “Pacific Rim” and ‘Godzilla’/Monsterverse franchises, the filmmaker actually said yes. In fact, he explained, “That was actually my long term plan. PR3 was structured to end in a way that married the two universes.”
He added, “To clarify, my plan does not mean that’s what would have happened. It was just an idea.”
Of course, he didn’t go into much detail about the actual way to combine the universes, but it can be assumed the wormholes in “Pacific Rim” would have somehow led to the crossover. That said, when a fan assumed this meant the Jaegers in “Pacific Rim” would fight Godzilla and/or Kong, the filmmaker replied, “You’re assume [sic] the giant robots would be fighting them. Which is incorrect, at least in my version.”

Obviously, Legendary would be silly not to imagine a world where Godzilla and King Kong exist side-by-side with the “Pacific Rim” universe. Now, there is the little problem of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which is mere weeks from release and continues to expand the Monsterverse and mark the first major crossover of the two franchises. So, if “Pacific Rim” is going to join the fun, that’s likely not for a while, considering Kong and Godzilla seem to be doing just fine by themselves.
“Godzilla vs. Kong” is set to be released on March 31. The “Pacific Rim” franchise continues in the upcoming Netflix animated series, “Pacific Rim: The Black,” which debuts on March 4.
