It’s been a full decade since the critically-acclaimed series “The L Word” left TV back in 2009. Far ahead of its time, “The L Word” was one of the few shows (or any media property, honestly) to depict a predominantly female cast, in a series filled with LGBTQ characters. Now, with inclusivity and diversity such a hot-button issue, “The L Word” returns to life with its new spin-off/revival ‘Generation Q.’
The new Showtime series debuts in December and follows the next generation of characters that will comprise the ensemble that is “The L Word.” However, it’s not just new faces. Several characters from the previous series will show up also, as ‘Generation Q’ is also a sequel to the original, set 10 years after.
Interestingly, for as acclaimed as the original series was at the time, “The L Word” has only received one Emmy nomination during its 6 season run, and it wasn’t even for a member of the regular cast. Perhaps, with networks relying on prestige dramas to fuel ratings, ‘Generation Q’ will rise above the first series and earn itself some more nominations, and perhaps even a few trophies.
The sequel series stars returning actresses Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, and Katherine Moennig, alongside the new cast, including Arienne Mandi, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, and Sepideh Moafi. The new series is showrun by Marja-Lewis Ryan, who is probably best known for writing and directing the recent film “6 Balloons.” She’s joined by co-creator Ilene Chaiken, who also produces.
“The L Word: Generation Q” debuts on Showtime on December 8.
Here’s the synopsis:
The groundbreaking drama series originally ran on SHOWTIME from 2004-2009. In this sequel, Beals, Moennig and Hailey will resume their original roles alongside a new generation of diverse, self-possessed LGBTQIA characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success in L.A.
